When the pen takes control.

Arms wide outspread he takes his ease

a time to rest before once more the breeze

says it’s time to turn and face the sun

for now I’m here there’s work to be done.

As the wind subsides

frenzied snowflakes come to rest

moonlit night now clear

After a lifetime spent going to sea

I have many memories

but one that is truly momentous

is watching a whale vent as

it rises to take one more gulp of air

There’s an old adage you must surely have heard

it just trips off the tip of the tongue

but now it’s replaced by a single word which

I think is from the East but most famously sung

on a record by the Beatles a long while ago

or perhaps not all of them but just the one

Instant Karma on Chapman we should entreat

and then surely find that revenge is sweet.

I have a little tractor

I ride on it all day

But if I asked my wife to do it

I know what she would say

Be off with you, you silly fool

You’ll not get me riding up there

I’m not interested in farmer’s tools

it would make a mess of my hair.

I’ve got work I must do here

Destiny awaits

bringing both joy and sadness

both finely balanced
