The inscribed plaque tells us a story
of how Pegasus in full sun’s glory
when in the sky a comet sees
leaps full bound over the Pleiades
but he will sadly fall back to Earth
as to wings he has not yet given birth.

With his navy blue jersey and black tar-hardened breeches his be-whiskered, weather-creased features formed a half smile as he sat upon the black and white iron bollard. Reaching down with his left hand he lazily stroked the rope sitting loosely on the jetty. He remembered the days when he too had worked with ropes and spars, thick hawsers and thin guy ropes, all had passed through his bent, gnarled, rough-skinned fingers. He could tell where every piece of Manila, hemp or coir had once been grown ready for harvesting and making up into the ropes that secured ships and boats throughout the world. All of them natural, lovingly twisted into multi-usable things. Now the ropes were all man-made, manufactured from plastic, never rotting, floating for ever when discarded, trapping birds, damaging all sea life, more debris in the corruption of the seas.

I’d like to impart to you something that I’ve learnt
if it’s a hot, sunny day your plants can get burnt
so leave the door open or perhaps a window instead
but make sure that you close it before you go to bed
for it sometimes gets very cold, especially through the night
and to find your precious plants all dead is not a pretty sight

The eyes of the world
watch those who choose to be free

Now when you open wide these doors
and gaze upon the view before
to left and right are twists and turns
but at the end there’s no return
so think wisely with each step you take
each pillar marks a choice to take

If I might take a little of your time
I will introduce you to some friends of mine
they may seem a little creepy to anyone new
but we all get funny after a year or two
sorry I forgot to tell you the price of a bed
they come free but to get in you have to be dead
and I’m afraid you can’t get a single room
it is always quite cosy in the catacomb.

On the plains of Serengeti
amazing stories may be found
where tales of life and death abound
most of which are seldom pretty
but for sure they’re always sweaty
as in the midday heat we find
predators and their prey entwined
but nothing doth instil fear more
than the sound of the lion’s roar
as it approaches from behind

It’s Saturday and it’s time to see
what challenge Sammi Cox has for me,
I might purport to be the best
to try my hand at his test
then it’s published, so sit and wait
to see if any likes I make
then I think well it’s not
how many likes I got,
followers I hope to gain
so next week I try again.

Now who would carve a ball of wool
up on the top of a wooden stool
so while I’m up here what the heck
I think I’m gonna have a peck
but ouch, that hurts and now I see
the ball is made of wood like me
so instead of finding a nice soft bed
I just get a sore bill and aching head
