the lofty, granite spires rise
atop piety,
remaining just a shadow
of the splendour that awaits.

I’m thinking this is Ely. Would I be right? Long years since I have visited there.

It is a beautiful catherdal, in a beautiful setting, though greatly changed since the days of Hereward.

I’ve not heard that he will. As far as I know, his grouse was with the Normans, and with good cause. 🙂

I think he lost it to a pear tree after he threw his lot in with the Danes (I guess he hoped then to bring home the bacon; an action more rasher would be hard to find.)

And did you know his family owned estates at Courteenhall in Northamptonshire near where I currently reside.

I knew he came from around about that area. There’s an erroneous notiion that he came from the Fens, just because that’s where the ‘end’ action was. Though I do confess I haven’t read much about him. I do know that Robert Malet’s father died in the conflict. Which may not mean much to you but I researched the family and its connections for a history project a few years back.
