Far above the concreted scene
stands a stone tower in the sky
a man there stands, with single eye
the other absent, never seen
ever watchful, his sight still keen
vigilant, as alone he stands
telescope clasped in single hand
his message clear for all to see,
they did their duty under me.
True patriots all, to a man.
Might you be referring to Nelson? Great Yarmouth’s one-time hero. Or another?

Oh, thank you very much. Actually he was born at Burnham on North Norfolk coast. I have a screen-shot of his birth recorded in the parish register. Somewhere deep in my files.
