Crimson’s Creative Challenge #180 #The oft unseen beauty in architecture

It’s taken a while but now I realise

that instead of walking with my eyes

on the paving stones, firmly set down

closing ears and mind to the traffic sounds

that if I’m after a pleasant surprise

instead I should raise them to the skies

to see battlements, arches, slit windows

how many arrows had been fired from those

well although actually if that’s not true

I can still imagine tales of derring-do

as I meander around doing my chores

smiling at the memory of tales of yore.

Sammiscribbles weekend writing prompt #255

A day that had seemed a long time coming was finally here. To say I was excited didn’t even come close to describing how I was feeling. Practising for four hours a day to the exclusion of family or social life. My well-thumbed dictionary pages were looking more dog-eared than a basset hound. Today I would be travelling by train to the famous Empire arena to enter and hopefully win the all England scrabble championship, better known as, “Lexicon,” my passport to fame.

Each twisted bare branch

retains a promise of fruit

blossom falls like snow.

Sammiscribbles weekend writing prompt #254 Alpine adventure

Umpapa, umpapa, that’s how it goes

umpapa umpapa everyone knows

whenever I hear the words such as these

I always think of frost laden trees

skyscraper mountains all covered in snow

from where loud alpine horns all echo,

apron clad frauleins bake apple strudel

while leather shorts clad men stand and yodel,

to the sound of , “Umpapa.”

Crimson’s Creative Challenge #178 New twist on old theme

Humpty Dumpty one day took his bird

to somewhere quiet so as not to be heard

when they had finished what he wanted to do

he got up on the wall to admire the view

and the rest as they say, is history.

Bright sun in blue skies

makes frost hardened ground glisten

Crimson’s Creative Challenge #177 A tale of the heavens

The inscribed plaque tells us a story

of how Pegasus in full sun’s glory

when in the sky a comet sees

leaps full bound over the Pleiades

but he will sadly fall back to Earth

as to wings he has not yet given birth.

SoCs March 26

With his navy blue jersey and black tar-hardened breeches his be-whiskered, weather-creased features formed a half smile as he sat upon the black and white iron bollard. Reaching down with his left hand he lazily stroked the rope sitting loosely on the jetty. He remembered the days when he too had worked with ropes and spars, thick hawsers and thin guy ropes, all had passed through his bent, gnarled, rough-skinned fingers. He could tell where every piece of Manila, hemp or coir had once been grown ready for harvesting and making up into the ropes that secured ships and boats throughout the world. All of them natural, lovingly twisted into multi-usable things. Now the ropes were all man-made, manufactured from plastic, never rotting, floating for ever when discarded, trapping birds, damaging all sea life, more debris in the corruption of the seas.
