Sammiscribbles weekend writing prompt #232 Poetry unpicked.

If with a love of poetry we are smitten

and are fascinated by how it’s written

reading words laid down in the earliest time

using their nuanced metre and rhyme,

reading such as Wordsworth, Byron too

who were looked upon as something so new

with words of love, nature and dreams

instead of just religious themes

whilst poetry in the modern age

seems to be full of frustration and rage

until when we read between the lines

the poets reflect our hearts and minds.

I once knew a sailor called Jack

loved it when the ship’s sails unfurled

and off he’d sail around the world

never knowing when he would be back

trusting the Captain to plot the track

constantly hoping for a breeze

to carry them across the seas

seeing foreign harbour lights

with all their promise of delights

to cater for the sailors needs.

Bowing my head I raise my eyes

in homage to the unknown men

and women who with just a pen

possessed the vision to design

these buildings reaching to the skies

where men may worship God on high

then secretly they gave their plans

to other experts in their field

for whom the blocks of stone did yield

when summoned from throughout the land

hammer and chisel in their hands.

Will we ever see

green is not just jealousy

There was a man possessed by a demon

he said his name was Legion

for we are many he whined

before being cast into the swine

and driven out of the region

We came upon a clearing where

birdsong drifted on the air

and gently lifted on the breeze

came the sound of trembling leaves,

trying not to make a sound

we laid our coats upon the ground

and leaning back against a tree

we poured ourselves a cup of tea.

The auditorium is in darkness. The stage curtains slowly open, a single spotlight shines down. An expectant hush settles throughout the auditorium. The audience burst into loud applause at the sight before them, slowly fading to a hush which rapidly turns into embarrassed laughter. Quiet at first then gradually rising to full-blown guffaws as It dawns upon the expectant horde that the brown coated man on the stage is not from the first scene of, “The Caretaker,” but the actual cleaner with his brush sweeping the stage.

You must forgive my misty eyes,

memories often make me weep

and even though I try to sweep

them off, they make me realise

I should forget them, as if lies,

but this I find so hard to do

replacing them with something new,

a task for which I may need help,

leave gloomy thoughts upon the shelf

but then see the futility

for they keep flooding back to me

from deep within my inner self.

It was time to spend more time at sea

with a tear she vowed to wait for me

but only after the second letter

she told me she’d found someone better

I suppose really I should have known

the love of my life had a heart of stone
