It was time to spend more time at sea
with a tear she vowed to wait for me
but only after the second letter
she told me she’d found someone better
I suppose really I should have known
the love of my life had a heart of stone

In the sunset glow, both world and waters calm
we strolled along the seafront arm in arm
to right and left lounged rusting hulls
overhead drifted screaming gulls
and before us in uncanny silence
from the sands arose two twisted pylons
where one night a raging conflagration
had produced this scene of devastation
not just some ramshackle dwelling
but home to a story that merits telling
where once had been music and lights
Mods and Rockers clashed in vicious fights
a fun palace that gave so many families cheer
the splendour that used to be Southgate pier.

A combine does it’s plotted round
leaves no waste upon the ground
to maintain our world of plenty
whilst my crop remains empty
no butterfly, aphid or bee
to feed my hungry family
I remember horses in the yard
their days were long, often hard
cutting the corn at stately pace
to feed the growing human race
now I fear those halcyon days
will be lost forever in the haze
of time, imprinted on our memory
just a sad but too familiar story

with pennants flying proudly
see how tall they stand
not quite in the water
nor fully on the land
standing straight-backed in the sun
like a regimental band.

In many houses throughout this land
whether they may be poor or grand
is practised with each new day a ritual
that would now be seen as habitual
as while you are sitting quite alone
you could just as easily grab the phone
yet over breakfast in the morning
or often as the day is dawning
sometimes even while still in bed
the daily newspaper will be read

Take a look at this lovely pony
it’s obvious he is feeling lonely
he knows if he squeezed through the fence
he’d be able to meet new friends
but for now he will just stand and sigh
as he sadly watches each passer-by

Let your imagination leap
and picture me as I mumble
Sir I am ever so humble
seen as the archetypal creep
I am of course Uriah Heep
Of all the books that you have read
this man will stick within your head
but if we look inside his mind
we gain insight into mankind
no better trait needs to be said.

Like many people in Britain I fear
who’ve all been waiting over a year
to see people on the other side of the world
who ran and jumped and bounced and twirled
but quite a few of us in the main
have watched the rowers as they strain
but have any of us ever thought
if they get sore sitting on those thwarts

Whilst on a trip down to the Weald
I went for a walk through the fields
The air smelt fresh, I soon saw why
On the hill was a huge pig sty
I have no qualms about pig-shit
Just glad I didn’t walk through it
Then a story came to my mind
The tale of the Gadarene swine
And the farmers in this region
Wouldn’t like it if I were Legion

The contestants in Paris to Dakar races
plan their routes on a most sensible basis
that if they are not able to carry any water
when planning their route they oughta
make certain that they can stop at an oasis.
