The contestants in Paris to Dakar races
plan their routes on a most sensible basis
that if they are not able to carry any water
when planning their route they oughta
make certain that they can stop at an oasis.

Fishermen’s cottages fringe the bay
as the cool evening mist comes down
the lamplighter begins his round
his measured footstep seems to say
the ending of another day
in the cramped parlours fires burn low
shadows form in their fading glow
whiskers twitching mice start to creep
wary of the ginger tom’s leap
knowing that fresh warm blood may flow

Here’s the story of Nathaniel Quinn
he never did learn how to swim
one day at the lakeside he fell in
and though everyone was looking for him
they never did find poor Nathaniel Quinn

Yesterday I went for a walk to see
what we had always known as the old dead tree
but you can imagine my surprise
at the beautiful sight that met my eyes
I stood and rubbed my eyes in disbelief
every old, twisted limb was coming into leaf
then I remembered what my mother once said
that nothing in nature is completely dead
and when old trees finally fall to the ground
their end of life will benefit all around

Lying prostrate upon the grass
up above looms a soft-edged mass
brings with it a threat of showers
staring down her grey face glowers
then all at once to my surprise
appears a bright mistimed sunrise
bringing anew a hope it may
drive all the sombre clouds away
and if I’m lucky it just might
change their colour from grey to white.

Today we all are wearing black
sporadic laughter, shoulders shake
no sombre silence shades the wake
as all reflect upon old Jack
now at the end of life’s long track
sad member of the widowed club
chose as his second wife the pub
so I think we should raise a toast
to one who did so more than most
and in the act was prone to blub.

Home comes the sailor, home from the sea,
he stands on the foc’sle and what does he see
a crowd of happy faces standing on the quay
he thinks my wife’s among them waiting there for me
but he’s not too surprised for this is not to be
she’s run away with Jim who lived at number three.

The trick or treaters getting weary
found our Uncle Fester cheery
even if he did look somewhat eerie
as smiling he said, “Hello dearie.”

I’m sure you don’t have to be told
the pleasure gained from listening
enraptured as the songbird sings
though whether it be wet or cold
his notes will shine like liquid gold
from his high perch up in the trees
his joyful tunes ride on the breeze
we can be sure he does not need
a written score from which to read
his repertoire is sure to please.

I decided I would take a photo
of the old Minster’s rose window
for when the sun shines down through the glass
you can see Saint Maria’s ass
as she leads it along the main street
in order to find grass to eat
but although I am not one to complain
sadly the weather turned to rain
so we went home, my camera and me
for there was no Pepper’s Ghost to see
